Film Poster Analysis

These films attract their target audiences with a strong, female protagonist as the audience are mainly female themselves. As well, there are many 'Coming of Age' films available, so to have positive reviews on the poster will distinguish the good from the bad in the genre. Talent will also attract viewers, an award-winning director or celebrity cast will raise peoples' expectations of the film.

The poster for 'Lady Bird' is laid out so that the star takes up the most space on the poster as the actress, Saoirse Ronan, was nominated for an Oscar for her performance and as the protagonist, the character is hugely important to the film. The other talent above her on the poster is smaller and she comes first, signifying her importance. The next most significant piece on the poster is the title, this is less important to the film but the title needs to be noticeable so that people remember the name of the film so that they can watch it. The poster has a border similar to a stained-glass window which has colours from the colour palette and probably some connection to a part of the film.

The 'Fish Tank' poster is different, the protagonist takes up less space because the actress is not a major star because she was spotted by the director and is not an actress so seeing her as the focus would not move people any more. The background picture contains a large blank space which has been filled with other elements of the poster such as large review quotes that occupy as much space as the star, this may be to compensate for the protagonist not being a celebrity. Similar to 'Lady Bird', the title is large to be more memorable and visible along side the good reviews. Then, at the bottom, there is the release release date, this is almost separate from the rest of the poster because it is aimed at the people who have seen the poster and are interested so have read it.

Fonts

Credit Block

This is my credit block, it contains a mix of a real distribution company, '20th Century Fox', but the production company and crew are made up based of my friends and classmates. This is the typical font used in film poster production because the roles are in a different size and format. Using this font on my poster would make it look professional. The need for a credit block on a film poster is a legal issue so all official film posters have them.

Colour Schemes

Reviewing these posters' colour palettes you can see that many of them contain flesh colours because of the characters on the poster. I also noticed that 'The Florida Project' and 'Fish Tank' have very vibrant posters because of the themes of the films while 'Lady Bird' is more subdued. This has helped me because I believe that I would like my poster to be vibrant too because it would fit the personality of the protagonist.

My Colour Scheme

This is my colour band, it contains the flesh approximate flesh colour of the protagonist, the pink of her costume and a short range of colours that I aim to have in the background. Here are some other colour bands I designed for my poster:

Swapping Poster Styles

I decided to make a poster for the film 'Okja' in the style of this poster for the film 'The Greatest Showman':
